What Should I Expect During An Energy Audit? Above all, you should expect to receive expert energy efficiency advice provided with professionalism and courtesy. We employ a staff of building science experts certified in nationally recognized programs.
1. When you schedule your audit we will ask you some brief questions about your home over the phone. The answers to these questions will assist in preparing and personalizing our testing approach.
2. We will ask you for a copy of your energy bills to understand your historical usage. Providing us your prior energy bills will allow us to be much more accurate in our savings projections and calculated ROI (Return On Investment).
3. We will come to your home at the scheduled appointment time, meet you and begin with an exterior inspection, looking for sources to your existing problems and assessing any potential problems. We will inspect all visible gas lines for signs of leaks and safety and continue by looking for building envelope penetrations that may be causing or contributing to problems with the home.
4. We will do an interior inspection and measure your home. In parallel, we will also be looking for signs of energy waste, poor indoor air quality, poor insulation, and improper seals around windows and doors.
5. Our auditor will test all of your combustion appliances to give you the peace-of-mind that your appliances are operating efficiently and not off-gassing carbon monoxide. Note: Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas produced by combustion appliances that is potentially life threatening. Carbon Monoxide poisoning claims the lives of hundreds of people every year.
6. A blower door test will be conducted to quantify the amount of air leakage. We will determine what rooms have problems while using a thermal imaging camera to document accordingly. If applicable, similar tests will be performed on your duct work to quantify the extent of leakage there.
7. All exhaust fans will be tested for appropriate moisture removal to ensure proper indoor air quality.
8. After the audit is complete the auditor will let you know if there are any immediate issues that need to be addressed with your home. Applicable reporting and estimated delivery will be also be communicated at the time of completion (as the ordered services can change reporting duration).
